The Golden Girls House: Get the Look

Have you caught The Golden Girls on Channel Five yet? The classic 1980’s sitcom that showed 4 ‘girls’ living in Miami by their own rules. Fancy a trip through their home and interiors?

Picture it…. lockdown 2020!

One thing lockdown has given us all is time. And, I’m not judging what you have been doing with your time as I have been using some of mine to re-watch The Golden Girls.

Yes. You read that right The Golden Girls.

Why? Because I figured as every episode from the seven season run was being re-shown on Channel Five every day at lunchtime on Monday to Friday (from Monday 27th April 2020) – after years of not being on British TV – that way I could watch it from beginning to end, in order. That pleases me no end.

The iconic and frankly ageless sitcom broke the mould in the mid 1980’s. What’s more The Golden Girls aired 35 years ago this year. In September 1985 to be precise. How old does that make you feel? Especially if you remember watching it the first time around – which I do, sort of. I remember watching it with my mum and thinking it was ‘funny’ but, not really getting it (I mean I was about 9/10 years old at the time). I used to think Dorothy, Blanche (especially Blanche) and Rose were so glamorous. And, their Miami home was the bungalow of dreams. I think it may be where my love of all things Miami or ‘Florida Style’ stems from.

Meet The Golden Girls

If you’re not a fan or have never seen an episode (!), in a nutshell The Golden Girls is a US sitcom that ran for 7 seasons and 180 episodes between 1985 and 1992. It followed the lives of four elderly women living together in a house in Miami – with a lanai. Don’t forget the lanai!

The show, starred Bea Arthur as Dorothy Zbornak, Betty White as Rose Nylund, Rue McClanahan as Blance Devereaux and Estelle Getty as Sophia Petrillo, who is Dorothy’s mother. The Golden Girls in its prime attracted around 30 million viewers and received 68 Emmy nominations during its almost decade run. It’s remembered for it catchy opening title song too… ‘thank you for being a friend….’

And, in true I’m-getting-obsessed-with-a-TV-show style (like here with Grace & Frankie’s Beach House Interiors get the look) I thought an interiors get the look for The Golden Girls was in order.

This won’t be the last of my Golden Girls’ posts I’m sure – I realised once again what a fan I am and, watching it this time I ‘get’ the jokes. Maybe, because I’m much nearer in age now (ha!) It’s the original Grace & Frankie or Sex & the City if you will.

OK yes, some episodes haven’t dated too well (in terms of being politicly incorrect, much like Friends) but, whatev’s it’s glorious to watch, the fashions and interiors are to die for, its still as funny as ever (especially sharp tongued Sophia) and, is making me want to go to Miami Beach again like right NOW!

Golden Decor: The Golden Girls Interiors

Golden Room: The Living Room was where most of the comedy happened. The original winged rattan couch and armchairs came from Harveys – a popular furniture store in LA – which was known for selling the ‘Florida Look’.
