Every night before bed Miss Marnie gets to choose her 3 books before bed – and more often than not they are all by Julia Donaldson.
No surprise when the children’s author and poet has published over 60 books – and we’ve a large collection already. Many I search out in charity shops – I have found some great ones in almost-perfect condition.
And, plus I don’t really mind as the rhyming words are easy to read even after a long commute home from work or a busy day together at home. Plus, I think Miss Marnie finds comfort in the bold pictures and easy to identify characters.
She’s often reluctant to try a new story – the book gets pushed aside with a strong ‘no mummy’ – but once I have eased her into it it becomes a firm favourite (and, one that I have to read over and over!)
We went to the library recently and gathered up some new material and I was a tad excited to find Julia Donaldson’s and Axel Scheffler most recent title The Scarecrows’ Wedding on the shelves. I grabbed it quick… for Miss Marnie of course!
|Our recent local library choices!|
|Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffer most recent book release – already a firm fave!|
So, I thought I would share with you Miss Marnie’s 10 most requested Julia Donaldson books – how many have you read?
(You may be surprised NOT to see Julia Donaldsons’ most famous book The Gruffalo here – its not that we don’t like it – but it is never one of Miss M’s first choices. Maybe she will grown into it…)
What the Ladybird Heard – This is almost a nightly read. I love the story and Miss Marnie likes to do the animal sounds
The Singing Mermaid – A recent find in the library but already a winner. The glittery pages are especially exciting to Miss M and I love anything about mermaids (yes, one of my fave films is Splash!)
Monkey Puzzle – Miss Marnie love animals and she especially loves the no, no, no bits…
Night Monkey, Day Monkey – This one is mostly request for daddy to read to her – I love the story and especially the last page (so cute!)
Tabby McTat – It’s about cats! Of course we had to have it – it also helps that its a brilliant story about friendship
Room on the Broom – Although it has a small scary bit – Miss Marine always wants to read the book about the ‘booooom’
Stick Man – Her nursery care worker told me she loves this story at circle time and we didn’t have it. So, after picking it up at the library – yes, you guessed it – we have been reading it on the hour, every hour ‘stick man, stick man…’
Toddle Waddle – This is a great fast, quick and easy read. I’m hoping this will be a good one for her first reading days
The Snail and The Whale – Sometimes my heart sinks a little when she chooses this one as it feels so long (and I HATE snails!) – but then I read it and remember why its so great!
Freddie and the Fairy – This is a cute little story and one daddy has to always read. (maybe because he has selective hearing too…)
