Organising a baby shower can sometimes be tricky.

You have the people who love the games, cooing over baby clothes and enjoy a spot of afternoon tea and then you have the ones who see it as a girls day out – away from the husband and kids and want to let loose.

But, at the end of the day the shower should be about the mum-to-be and what she likes.

I knew instantly what kind of baby shower I was going to throw for my friend Heledd (from Running in Lavender) – and that was that I wasn’t going to throw one!

Having been friends for nearly 20 years and this being her 3rd baby I knew she wouldn’t want a massive fuss. So, when The Brooklands Hotel  – an iconic, art-deco inspired luxury hotel got in touch about some new treatments in the spa – I knew I had found the perfect ‘baby shower’ for her.

That being a day out, just the two of us, with no kids and best of all near to our homes. So, after a short train and cab journey and we were whisked into the heavenly Brooklands Spa.

Our day started as many spa breaks do with some form filling, collecting robes/slippers and more importantly being shown where everything is.

The Brooklands Spa is intimate – but there is enough areas for you to catch some quiet time. The loungers near the outside hot tub overlooking the Mercedes Benz World track (a lot more soothing than it sounds honestly), the chill out area (that you book for a 20 mins nap) and the cafe area.

The cafe area was a great place to chat, read some magazines and of course eat. A really nice touch is that all the tables are set up with your names so you know where you’re sitting come lunch or afternoon tea time. I have to just mention too –  that our lunch was amazing.

Although, when my Lamb Koftas and Bulgur wheat salad arrived I thought this is never going to fill me up – but the light and balanced meal was perfect and of course, the fresh fruit salad and sorbet afterwards helped.

We also had a mini cream tea in the afternoon (the pregnant lady was hungry is my excuse and I’m sticking to it) – which was equally as delicious.

After a relaxed morning in the loungers and lunch we both had some treatments. I tried the new Caudalie Vinoperfect Radiance Facial – a unique treatment to correct the complexion and help restore radiance and vitality in the skin. Perfect for tired and dull skin – perfect for mums then! It uses hot and cold basalt (a fine grained volcanic rock) stones, special massage techniques and a peel mask to reveal ‘luminous’ skin after 50 minutes.

Heledd had the Caudalie Expectant Mother Massage. A gentle massage using grape-seed oil to help soothe those mum-to-be tensions and improve skin tone and elasticity. H told me she felt so relaxed afterwards she didn’t want to move. Just what she needed…

All in all the perfect relaxed alternative baby shower – the mum-to-be may not get showered with gifts but some much needed rest before the impending birth is surely gift enough…right?

Brooklands Hotel & Spa is in Weybridge, Surrey and has brilliant spa day packages including lunch and drinks starting at £130.
