One thing that everyone drums into you when you have had a baby is not to neglect your relationship and schedule in regular mummy and daddy time. Admittedly, in the first few months after birth it’s hard to muster up the energy to head out in the evening – let alone be romantic.
But, I hear it’s important to have regular Date Nights.
A prearranged occasion on which an established couple, especially one with children, go for a night out together:
1. ‘they make sure they have a date night every week’
2. ‘she’s planning date night with her husband’
(from the Oxford dictionary)
I say hear because Mr VIB and I haven’t had a date since Miss Marnie arrived!
“What do you mean you haven’t been on a date in over a year?”
Yes, it’s true. There was a part of me that didn’t want to fess up to this. But, we haven’t had a night out on our own in over 18 months. Lack of babysitters, family to lean on nearby and mainly due to a co-sleeping/extended breastfeeding schedule (due to a formula intolerance) we couldn’t really make it happen.
And, do you know what? If I am truly honest I’m just fine with that.
It really hasn’t bothered me (or Mr VIB). But, it seems to bother other people as they can’t seem to understand why we haven’t been out ALONE! The truth is I have been with Mr VIB for over 18 years and we’ve had plenty of date nights thank you very much! We’ve had lots of holidays, weekend getaways in boutique hotels, last-minute dates out on the town and all that jazz.
And, now our time together is about Miss Marnie and doing things as a family.
Maybe I am wrong? Maybe I should just bite to bullet find a babysitter, pull on my heels and get out there. But, one thing that runs through my mind (apart from what on earth are we going to talk about/will I fall asleep during dessert?/am I still interesting enough to date?) is what the hell am I going to WEAR!
On that note here’s some Date Night style ideas for when you haven’t had a date in a while/need to update your mummy look/just want to wear something new. Who knows maybe I will get to follow my own style advice soon…
